Tom Fletcher, because of the times, became inextricably involved in the English Civil War. Tom is an ingenious doctor using always the practical remedies that are readily available. Tom Fletcher is also grateful for any assistance from wise women and the apothecaries whom he encounters. His approach to medicine is innovative as he has been trained by a man, Ben Knowles ("First Dry Rattle"), who preferred the practicality of Middle Eastern broad sanitory eclectism, rather than the narrow fashionable dogma of ancient Galen theories, relying as it does on dubious astrology.
His pragmatism is evident when he is placed in danger. He will concentrate on what might seem a trivial detail, and will use it to his advantage with resourcefulness and ingenuity.
In his doctoring he displays patience and tolerance. Where others find the smell of decay intolerable, Tom Fletcher is impervious to the inconveniences that arise from the practice of medicine, and can remain in control in atmospheres where appalling stenches prevail. He is also immune to the sights of disease and the agonising sounds of maiming, keeping his head where others would turn away.
